Engaging students with soil health, sustainability, and local action

On 7 November 2025, ADROCHES delivered an on-site MONALISA school outreach session at CEIP San Miguel in Villanueva de Córdoba (Córdoba, Spain). The activity brought together around 50 students and focused on explaining through an accessible, interactive format why soil health matters and how the MONALISA project contributes to tackling soil degradation.

Bringing soil science closer to young people

Soil can feel “invisible” in everyday life, yet it underpins food production, biodiversity, water regulation, and climate resilience. During the session, Aleix Antonell and Juan Francisco Díaz (ADROCHES) introduced students to MONALISA’s core mission and connected it to real-life challenges faced by rural and agricultural territories.

The workshop-style approach encouraged participation and helped translate complex topics into practical messages students could relate to.

What the students learned

The presentation centred on three key themes:

  • Soil is a living resource that supports ecosystems and agriculture.

  • Soil degradation is a growing risk, linked to erosion, loss of fertility, and pressure from climate extremes.

  • Innovation and good practices can make a difference, and MONALISA supports this by improving knowledge, monitoring, and awareness around soil degradation.

Why school outreach is part of the solution

Engaging with schools is a concrete way to build long-term impact. By introducing soil concepts early, we help strengthen:

  • environmental awareness and responsibility,

  • curiosity about science and innovation, and

  • a stronger connection between local communities and European sustainability initiatives.

MONALISA project thanks the school team and students of CEIP San Miguel for their welcome and active participation. Moments like this show how European projects can create value locally, not only through tools and research, but also through education and community engagement.
