Policy Brief: Bridging the Gap: Funding Transdisciplinary Research for Sustainable Land and Water Management in the Euro-Mediterranean Region
MONALISA contributed to the policy brief “Bridging the Gap: Funding Transdisciplinary Research for Sustainable Land and Water Management in the Euro-Mediterranean Region.” The brief explains that while EU programmes increasingly encourage stakeholder engagement, truly transdisciplinary work where researchers, farmers, policymakers, NGOs, and businesses co-design solutions needs more flexible funding, longer timelines, and sustained support to build trust and deliver lasting impact in a climate-change hotspot.
Drawing on lessons from multiple EU-funded projects REACT4MED, Front AG Nexus, MONALISA, OurMED, PAS-Agro-PAS, and TERRASAFE, it recommends: (1) funding structures that allow phased projects, continuity, and follow-up; (2) stronger recognition of collaboration quality (and resources for facilitation and stakeholder participation); and (3) investment in capacity building and skills for both researchers and stakeholders - supporting progress toward the European Green Deal.
