Who We are
The MONALISA project (MONitoring and Assessing prevention and restoration soLutIons to combat deSertificAtion), an Innovation Action Horizon project aimed at preventing and reversing Land Degradation and Desertification (LDD) across Mediterranean drylands, has started with the Kick-off Meeting hosted by Università degli Studi di Sassari (UNISS) in Sassari, Italy. The project is funded under the Horizon Europe program under the topic HORIZON-MISS-2023-SOIL-01-04. The Granting Authority for this project is the European Research Executive Agency (REA), under the European Commission.

Case Studies
The work of MONALISA project will be carried out in the 6 Mediterranean case studies Los Pedroches in Spain, Médenine in Tunisia, Berchidda-Monti and Alta Mugria Park in Italy, Asterousia in Greece and Beit Dajan in Palestine.
The six groups of solutions that are assessed, replicated and expanded are:
- Innovative grazing systems
- Microbial-based solutions
- Conservation agriculture practices
- Ecological restoration practices
- Water harvesting techniques;
- Treated wastewater reuse in agriculture.
Within these case studies, stakeholders will be fully engaged in collaborative design, implementation, and evaluation processes, building capacities to adopt and implement these innovative solutions to prevent and mitigate land degradation in the Mediterranean region.
MONALISA PROJECT VALUE
The consortium of partners comprised universities, research centers, institutes, SMEs, NGOs and networks with the goal of identifying and promoting innovative and tailored solutions for the prevention and minimisation of land degradation and desertification (LDD).
6 Case Studies in 5 countries to develop, use and innovate the proposed solutions to reverse and prevent LDD.
The six case studies will involve researchers and stakeholders to co-design, co-implement, and co-evaluate a range of innovative prevention and restoration solutions.
