UNISS
NRD – UNISS is an Interdepartmental Centre of the University of Sassari that promotes interdisciplinary research and studies on desertification and land degradation and on sustainable land management. NRD is part of the Global Network of Dryland Research Institutes and is the operational secretariat of DesertNet International, an international association of researchers accredited to UNCCD and UNFCCC.
NRD – UNISS is the leading Institution of MONALISA. It thus coordinates the project activities and participates to all WPs, in particular to WP2 co-leading the Berchidda-Monti case study, and to WP4 by addressing desertification through digital innovation at CS scale.
“The ambition within MONALISA is to identify and expand innovative and tailored solutions to prevent and reverse land degradation and desertification while showcasing their socio-economic and environmental effectiveness and thus contributing to support the economic growth of European and Mediterranean drylands.”
ASSOC. PROF. GIOVANNA SEDDAIU (Coordinator)
Primary research field: agronomy and crop sciences.
As the Primary Investigator of UNISS she will manage and coordinate the project and will be involved in all WPs, in the co-design and implementation of innovative practices for preventing and reversing LDD processes.
ASSOC. PROF. GIOVANNI GARAU
Primary research field: soil chemistry.
He will test the impact of organic-based amendments on plant development, nutrition and tolerance to drought and salt stress, as well as on soil physical chemical, biochemical, and microbiological characteristics.
PROF. LUCIANO GUTIERREZ
Primary research field: agricultural economics and policies
He will be mainly involved in demonstrating the social acceptability and economic viability of innovative practices for preventing LDD, to provide insights into behavioural factors and policy implications of the new solution adoption.
MEET OUR PARTNERS
Led by the University of Sassari, the MONALISA is a EU Soil Mission project that brings together leaders from industry, policy, government, research, academia, and science across Mediterranean to collaborate on the next generation of solutions to combat land degradation and desertification processes in the climate-sensitive drylands through innovative planning and management.
